Quick thinking from British Solar Renewables’ (BSR) Operation and Maintenance (O&M) team helped catch several burglars attempting to steal solar panels from a site they manage.
On the afternoon of 2nd November, alarms and cameras picked up several suspicious-looking people on the site of Overton solar park, a 3.7MW facility in Overton, Hampshire. BSR’s O&M team was alerted, and called the landowner and subcontractors, confirming that they did not have any people on site.
BSR technicians suspected that the intruders were scoping out the park for a break-in. Later that evening, these suspicions were confirmed when several people broke into the park, stealing 35-40 solar panels. The security team called the police immediately and four people were arrested.
Graham Harding, Managing Director and Chief Financial Officer of BSR, said: “This shows it is absolutely crucial to have strong relationship with clients, landowners and other stakeholders. At BSR we pride ourselves on going the extra mile in this area. And it’s not just about crime prevention – strong relationships help us get the most from the assets we manage.”
Overton solar park was built by BSR in 2016 and is owned by Cubico Sustainable Investments. It is one of many solar parks operated by BSR, which together make up almost 6% of the utility-scale solar in the UK.
