What you will be doing in this role:

Reporting into the Head of Legal, the Property Lawyer at British Solar Renewables will be integral to managing a wide range of property-related legal matters, supporting renewable energy projects from inception to completion. You will collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders to ensure seamless execution of property transactions while maintaining compliance and mitigating legal risks.

What we need from you:

Property Transactions

  • Draft, review, and negotiate all property-related legal documents, including Options for Leases, Leases, Deeds of Surrender, Easements, Sub-leases, Licenses, Wayleaves, and Site Sharing Agreements.
  • Manage external lawyers to ensure timely progress and completion of Certificates of Title and property-related SPA inputs.
  • Instruct and oversee external lawyers for the exchange and completion of Options/Leases.
  • Conduct title reviews, prepare title reports, and provide advice and instructions on property transactions.
  • Liaise with landlords' solicitors, land agents, and internal teams, such as the design, grid connections, and project management teams, on boundary plans and redline requirements.

Easements, Wayleaves, and Substation Leases

  • Collaborate with the grid team, project managers, and planning consultants to identify and secure cost-effective cable connection routes for projects.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate Options for Easements, Deeds of Easement, Wayleaves, and Substation Leases.
  • Liaise with third-party landowners’ solicitors, DNOs, and their agents to finalise necessary agreements.

Due Diligence and Funding

  • Address queries from buyers, funders, and due diligence teams, providing advice and solutions for legal issues.
  • Support funding processes by negotiating documents such as Direct Agreements and coordinating with landowners’ solicitors to ensure timely completion.
  • Conduct thorough reviews of due diligence findings to resolve identified challenges.

Risk Management and Compliance

  • Ensure GDPR compliance across the business and manage relationships with compliance training providers.
  • Coordinate with HR and IT to roll out compliance training courses and ensure adherence to legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Assist the Deputy CEO in managing legal risk and maintaining compliance across various operational areas.

Legal Team and General Advisory

  • Manage external property legal teams and provide guidance to the internal legal team when required.
  • Advise on all aspects of property law, including title issues, restrictive covenants, wayleaves, easements, SDLT, Land Registry applications, and grazing licenses.
  • Address ad hoc queries related to property and non-property legal matters.
  • Attend board meetings as needed and provide direct legal support to the Deputy CEO and company Directors.

Skill requirement:

  • Qualified solicitor with expertise in property law, preferably within the renewable energy or infrastructure sectors.
  • Proven experience in drafting, negotiating, and managing complex property agreements.
  • Strong understanding of title reviews, due diligence, and compliance processes.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to liaise effectively with internal teams, external lawyers, and stakeholders.
  • Experience in risk management, compliance, and GDPR regulations is desirable.
  • Proactive, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
