Introducing Our Community Commitment Pledge
Renewable energy projects are built to last for decades. The relationships around them should too.
At British Solar Renewables, we’ve always believed successful renewable energy projects depend on more than generating clean energy. They depend on trust, transparency and strong local relationships.
That’s why we’ve launched our Community Commitment Pledge: a public commitment that sets out how we’ll work with communities before, during and long after our projects are built.
Why we created the community commitment pledge
The transition to clean energy is reshaping how energy is generated, how land is used and how communities share in its benefits. As renewable energy becomes an increasingly important part of the UK’s infrastructure, we believe projects should create meaningful value for the places they become part of.
For us, community engagement has never been about meeting planning requirements alone. It’s about building relationships based on respect, openness and shared understanding. The Community Commitment Pledge is our way of setting that expectation clearly and publicly.
What the pledge commits to
The pledge is built around four core commitments:
- Acting in a way that is positive for both the planet and the communities we operate in
- Keeping everyone who works with and for us healthy and safe
- Treating people with respect, fairness and dignity
- Minimising the impact of our activities through responsible operations and sustainable choices
These commitments are supported by a series of practical promises, including community benefit funds, support for local initiatives, ongoing engagement, local jobs and skills, and long-term relationships that continue throughout the life of a project.
Turning commitments into action
The pledge includes a range of practical commitments designed to create lasting local value.
These include community benefit funds, support for local initiatives and events, promotion of local jobs and skills, investment in community wellbeing measures and ongoing engagement with the communities around our projects.
It also reflects our commitment to ensuring engagement is inclusive and accessible, helping us reach a broad range of people and communities.
Building on our Nature Protection Pledge
The Community Commitment Pledge follows the same approach as our Nature Protection Pledge.
While the Nature Protection Pledge sets out how we protect and enhance the environment, the Community Commitment Pledge focuses on the people and places connected to our projects. Together, they reflect our belief that renewable energy should work hand in hand with both communities and nature.
