The organisation
British Solar Renewables Australia (BSR Australia) is the Australian business of British Solar Renewables, a UK-founded, fully integrated independent power producer. It develops, builds, owns and operates utility-scale solar farms and battery energy storage systems across the Northern Territory, Victoria and Queensland, with offices in Brisbane and Melbourne.
BSR entered the Australian market more than five years ago, drawing on UK experience built up since British Solar Renewables was founded in 2010.

Ownership
British Solar Renewables, and therefore its Australian business, is majority owned by ICG Infra, which gives BSR the financial strength and stability to deliver complex infrastructure projects across the UK and Australia. BSR became part of ICG Infra in 2022. ICG Infra is the infrastructure investment arm of Intermediate Capital Group, a London-listed alternative asset manager.

How BSR works: from green fields to grid
BSR’s originate-to-operate model takes each project through three stages under one roof, in Australia exactly as in the UK:
- Develop: identifying the right land, grid connection and partners to deliver energy where it is needed most.
- Build: engineering and constructing renewable assets with in-house expertise, safely and efficiently.
- Operate: managing sites with long-term responsibility for reliability, safety and sustainability.
Because BSR still owns and operates each site long after construction, commitments made at approvals stage are carried through the life of the asset by the same company.

Northern Territory: Four operating solar farms
Katherine Solar Farm is the first and largest solar and storage project in the Northern Territory, located approximately 5km north-west of Katherine. It has 99,180 photovoltaic modules rated at 340W each, giving a DC capacity of 33.7MWp, and connects via the 22kV distribution network to the Katherine 132/22kV Zone Substation by double circuit overhead line. Its export limit to the Katherine network is 25MW AC.
Batchelor Solar Farm sits near Batchelor, approximately 100km south of Darwin. It has a DC capacity of 12.5MW from 28,756 photovoltaic modules rated at 435W each, delivering around 10MW AC to the local 22kV distribution network. It is connected to the Darwin–Katherine Interconnected System via the Batchelor 132/22kV Zone Substation.
Batchelor 2 Solar Farm is a 12.5MWp / 10MW AC grid-connected plant at Batchelor, connecting by underground cabling to the Batchelor 132/22kV Zone Substation.
Manton Dam Solar Farm is located approximately 100km south of Darwin. It has 28,420 photovoltaic modules of 440W each, creating a DC capacity of 12.5MWp with a 10MW AC export limit, connecting to the Manton 132/22kV Zone Substation by overhead transmission line.

Victoria: Kerang
Kerang Solar Farm is an operating 37.2MWp installation in the Gannawarra Shire, northern Victoria, owned and operated by BSR. It uses Single Axis Tracker technology paired with bifacial modules to maximise efficiency and output, and connects via the 22kV distribution network to the Kerang Zone Substation by underground transmission line, feeding into the Kerang Terminal Substation. Its export limit to the network is 30MW AC.
The Kerang Energy Storage Project is a proposed development of up to two large-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems alongside the existing solar farm. The first stage is set to deliver up to 230MW with four hours of storage, with the option of a second stage of up to 400MW, strengthening local energy resilience and supporting a more stable, flexible grid for the region.

Queensland: Mackenzie River
The proposed Mackenzie River Solar Farm and BESS extends over two private properties on the Fitzroy Developmental Road in Mackenzie River, Queensland. It combines a solar farm with a battery energy storage system, feeding power into the local network through an existing transmission line within the project site. Anticipated capacity is 450 MW of solar with a 450 MW Battery Energy Storage System, using single-axis tracking. The proposed development has the capacity to power approximately 150,000 average Australian homes each year while creating local employment and supply chain opportunities.
BSR is currently undertaking detailed design and development application preparation, with the intent to have the solar farm operational in 2031. The project is at development stage and is not yet approved or under construction. BSR is collaborating with Isaac Regional Council to create a Community Benefit Agreement for the project.

Working with landowners
BSR leases land from Australian farmers and landowners to host solar and battery storage projects. Landowners can expect stable, passive income for 30 or more years, retain ownership of their land while leasing part of it, and pay nothing upfront because BSR covers all costs. BSR provides full-service management from approvals through to operations.
Land is likely to suit a BSR project if it is close to a transmission line or substation, has 20 or more hectares of relatively flat, unshaded land, and is not in a flood-prone or environmentally restricted area.
Sheep can be grazed alongside the panels, so lease income can sit alongside continued farming and the land can retain primary production status.
The process runs in five steps: register your land; initial studies of grid access and suitability; a site visit covering grid, environmental and planning conditions; further detailed assessment of planning controls, environmental controls and other constraints, leading to an option agreement and Heads of Agreement; and a final long-term lease with guaranteed annual payments.

Working with communities
BSR puts a Community Benefit Agreement (CBA) in place for every Australian project, ensuring benefits are delivered back to the communities it works in.
Wider community support includes:
- Education: school visits, STEM workshops, partnerships with local TAFEs and universities, and career talks.
- Sponsorships: backing local events and sporting or community groups.
- Information sessions: town halls, community displays and clear, timely communication through the planning process and beyond.
- Community events: local engagement activities within every project engagement plan.
BSR’s first step in engaging any community is to ask residents how they would like to be engaged and communicated with.
At Kerang, BSR engaged local volunteer group Kerang Neighbourhood House to understand community needs and priorities during development of the solar farm. The initiative selected was the provision of disaster relief boxes, chosen in recognition of the region’s history of severe flooding, which repeatedly impacted lives and damaged critical infrastructure. BSR funded the boxes and worked with Neighbourhood House to distribute them locally.

First Nations engagement
British Solar Renewables Australia has prepared a Reconciliation Action Plan (Innovate) for 2025–27. The plan has been submitted to Reconciliation Australia for approval and a second draft has been lodged. BSR has engaged Barada Kabalbara Yetimarala (BKY) First Nations artist Samantha Booth to design an Aboriginal artwork for the cover of the plan.
At the proposed Mackenzie River Solar Farm and BESS in Queensland, BSR acknowledges the Barada Kabalbara Yetimarala (BKY) People as the Traditional Owners of the project area. In October 2025 BSR established a Cultural Heritage Agreement and a Sharing of Project Benefits Agreement with the Bulgan Tara Yanal Aboriginal Corporation.
British Solar Renewables Australia acknowledges Traditional Owners of Country throughout Australia and recognises the continuing connection to lands, waters and communities, paying respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and to Elders past and present.
