What is a Contract for Difference?
A Contract for Difference (CfD) is the UK Government’s flagship scheme to support the generation of low-carbon electricity.
CfDs provide clean energy producers with long-term price certainty, supporting the delivery of solar and wind projects at scale while protecting consumers from market volatility.
The mechanism guarantees a stable, predictable income by covering the difference between the market price of electricity and an agreed “strike price”. This stability enables British Solar Renewables to focus on what matters most: delivering clean, reliable energy that powers homes, businesses, and communities across the UK.
Our role in the CfD scheme
At British Solar Renewables, we’ve been driving the UK’s renewable energy transformation for over 15 years. Our participation in the CfD programme underpins a stable, predictable revenue base for investors and partners, reinforcing our position as a trusted Independent Power Producer (IPP).
We believe balance matters, therefore our portfolio combines CfD-secured projects with Corporate Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs). This dual approach gives us flexibility to adapt to market opportunities, while delivering tailored solutions for both investors and energy consumers alike.
Together, CfDs and PPAs form a resilient foundation for growth, allowing us to deliver stability and innovation side by side.
Technologies we deliver under CfDs
Our integrated model covers the full lifecycle of renewable energy generation, from development through construction and operation.
Through the CfD scheme, we continue to deliver large-scale projects across:
- Solar PV: Utility-scale solar farms providing clean, affordable power to the grid.
- Hybrid and co-located sites: Pairing solar with battery energy storage for stability and flexibility.
- Wind: complementing our solar portfolio and supporting the UK’s diverse renewable mix.
Each CfD-backed project we deliver is designed to achieve the highest environmental standards, supporting biodiversity, powering communities, and long-term national energy resilience.
Why CfDs matter — and what they mean for you
For investors
While CfDs support corporations directly, they also benefit the wider economy. By ensuring the growth of affordable renewable power, CfDs help businesses access clean electricity through mechanisms like PPAs, supporting energy security, cost stability, and net zero goals.
Partnering with BSR means:
- Benefits through a reliable renewable energy supply
- Contribution to ESG and net zero targets
- Delivering power with purpose, for people and the planet
