About this project
The Katherine Solar Farm is the first and largest solar and storage project in the Northern Territory, located just 5km northwest of Katherine.
It combines large-scale solar generation with advanced battery energy storage, providing clean, reliable electricity to thousands of homes and businesses across the region. The solar farm has a variety of weather sensors installed throughout the park to accurately capture weather conditions, ensuring the plant’s energy export is maximised without impacting grid stability.
With a DC capacity of 33.7MWp and an export limit of 25MW AC, the solar farm produces around 31,934MWh of renewable energy annually. This production of clean energy is enough to power over 8,400 average homes while avoiding more than 7,468 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year.
Technology and innovation
The Katherine Solar Farm integrates advanced solar and battery storage technology to deliver dependable renewable power.
- Single-axis tracking allows panels to follow the sun’s path, maximising daily energy yield.
- Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) enables flexible energy supply and grid stability, storing excess generation for use when demand peaks or sunlight is low.
- Smart forecasting and weather sensors predict irradiance and adjust inverter output in real time, ensuring optimal performance without compromising system security.
This innovation ensures clean energy is available when it’s needed most, strengthening local energy resilience and advancing the Territory’s renewable energy goals.
Working with and for communities
At British Solar Renewables, we collaborate with communities to deliver clean energy that supports both local needs and tackles the climate crisis.
This project has supported local employment, advanced renewable energy skills, and contributed directly to the Northern Territory’s clean energy transition, helping to power communities sustainably for decades to come.
Throughout the Katherine Solar Farm’s development, we worked closely with:
- Local landowners and councils to ensure responsible land use and minimal disruption.
- Community and environmental groups to keep residents informed and engaged.
- Regional businesses and suppliers to create local job opportunities and strengthen the regional economy.
Protecting nature and cultural heritage
The Katherine region’s rich cultural and environmental heritage is at the heart of how this project was planned and delivered.
We prioritised low-impact, responsible development, minimising waste, air emissions, and water use while maintaining harmony with the surrounding environment.
The site sits near Nitmiluk National Park, an area of national significance, and every step of construction was guided by strong environmental management practices to protect the region’s natural beauty.
